Case Study

Hanscom Field Taxiway Laser Pilot

Hanscom Field

As a substitution to traditional mapping techniques which are time consuming and costly, Meridian Associates utilized 3D laser scanning to capture existing conditions for 3,000 linear feet of paved taxiway and surrounding grass surface of Hanscom Airfield Taxiway.

The scan data collected was sufficient to map pavement surfaces at an accuracy of 1/4" (0.02') with contour interval of (0.2'). The scanning and mapping services were part of a pilot program for MassPort. MassPort is currently evaluating the potential of using 3D laser scanning for collection of existing conditions on taxiways and runways at their airfields to minimize the temporary closure of runways for pre-design mapping services.
