Central Artery Tunnel (C17A6 contract)
Boston, Massachusetts (Dewey Square)

Modern Continental

The Central Artery/Tunnel project extends between Kneeland Street and Causeway Street. Previously, the elevated artery supported a portion of the I-93 corridor, which now has been routed under ground making way for the development of the Rose Kennedy Greenway. The Greenway brings urban boulevards built on a pedestrian scale to Boston's dense old downtown neighborhoods. Modern Continental retained the services of Meridian Associates, to digitally scan the interior of the Dewey Square Tunnel. Meridian Associates implemented LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to create a virtual model of interior surfaces to accommodate design modifications and retrofit structural steel. The ability to collect large quantities of data to a level of efficiency not previously available has saved hundreds of personnel hours.
