A joint effort with The Washington Group was undertaken to take advantage of an unscheduled shut down of a nuclear power plant at the Fermi facility in Detroit, Michigan. 3D Laser Scanning techniques were used to document current surface conditions and accelerate planned maintenance of cooling system components in the dry-well of the Reactor area.

Replacement of mechanical equipment in congested and confined spaces creates a difficult planning situation. High resolution scanning gives the ability to produce a 3 dimensional CAD model of existing conditions. Using the model, engineers can plan and coordinate to avoid construction conflicts and possible obstructions/ interferences prior to implementation.
Engineers can also devise a more accurate timeline for construction estimation.
