Case Study

Sunoco #3 Boiler House
Girard Point Refinery
Philadelphia, PA

BE & K Construction Company

Sunoco's Philadelphia Refinery plant is the oldest continuously operating petroleum facility in the world with origins dating back to the 1860s when the petroleum industry was in its infancy. Meridian conducted high definition 3D Laser Scanning in support of the #3 Boiler House Ultra-Low NOx Burner upgrade project.

Laser scanning was used to completely capture the interior and exterior of a building housing four boilers; the scan model then provided an accurate blueprint for the planning interior and exterior modifications. The data will be used for conceptual design, design verification, interference detection and verification.

Project Benefits: The primary benefit of Laser Scanning is the ability to identify interferences up front and design around them, significantly reducing or eliminating construction rework. With the increased awareness for safety and limited plant access, the ability to "virtually" visit the site proved a challenging work environment, but an efficient process allowed the scan and survey teams to perform without conflicts.

Adhering to the client's tight schedule restraints, Meridian was able to mobilize quickly and provide comprehensive data in a short time period.
