Case Study

Nashoba Park Assisted Living Facility
Ayer, Massachusetts

Volunteers of America of Massachusetts Inc.

The 73-unit facility was constructed by expanding an existing historic building located on the edge of a residential neighborhood. Constructed in the 1920s, the historically listed building was originally constructed as a hospital and served as a nursing home during recent years.

There were two significant site design challenges presented by this project. The first was to effectively integrate the proposed facility expansion into the surrounding residential neighborhood while preserving the building's historic character. This was accomplished by working with neighborhood groups to preserve critical open space areas and mature vegetation. Parking and service areas were concentrated and screened using structures and additional plant materials. The second landscape design challenge involved creating an internal courtyard garden for use by facility residents.
