Case Study

Downtown Revitalization
- Park and Canal Walk

Client:

The Town of Hudson

Description:

For years, the blight area in downtown Hudson between lower Main Street and the Assabet River had been a liability to the Town and area residents. With remnant foundations of rail spur, coal/lumber storage warehouses and tannery, the overgrown area along the canal needed help. In the 1990s, the Town of Hudson took steps to renew economic vitality, improve parking in support of Main Street businesses and improve local recreational opportunities. Today, the former industrial site has been cleaned up and is being transformed into a community asset.

Meridian Associates, Inc. worked with the Town of Hudson to implement two key revitalization improvements, namely: the development of Canal walk along the Tannery Brook Canal and the expansion/improvement of South Street Park. From initial discussions through construction, Meridian provided program formulation, concept plan and cost estimate in support of grant applications for public funding (to raise $1,000,000 + from local, state & federal sources). Services included: design development, coordination of landscape architecture, engineering, geotechnical, structural, and Skate park sub-consultants; contract document preparation and construction administration services. The Park features state-of-the-art Skate Park and Splash park facilities.
