British Petroleum Laser Scan
Registration Process
Texas City, Texas

British Petroleum (BP) Products North America

The BP facility in Texas City is the United States's third largest oil refinery, employing over 2,000 people and processing 460,000 barrels (73,000 m3) of crude oil each day. The site is involved in laser scanning to meet new requirements for documentation as well as ongoing plant retrofit projects for modifications and upgrades. The Leica HDS 4500 data is being used to capture the field information while meeting much more stringent site access requirements. Meridian Associates provided professional technical services for laser scanning site data. These services include registration, data processing, and quality assurance analysis.

In 2005, the Texas City BP refinery was the site of an unfortunate industrial accident. CSB investigators have reported that explosions occurred when a distillation tower flooded with hydrocarbons and was over-pressurized, causing a geyser-like release from the vent stack. The explosions occurred during the restarting of a hydrocarbon isomerization unit.
