MALDEN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL WINS TWO TROPHIES IN STATEWIDE MODEL BRIDGE COMPETITION
AWARD-WINNING MODEL BRIDGE CLUB MENTORED BY LOCAL ENGINEER

MALDEN, MA (February 9, 2012) – Malden Catholic High School’s Model Bridge Club recently competed in the 2012 Model Bridge Competition. This annual competition is jointly sponsored by the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section and the Massachusetts Pre-Engineering Program in collaboration with the Northeastern's NUPrime Program and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Malden Catholic entered five bridges in the competition, capturing first and second place in the Most Aesthetic Bridge category. The award-winning bridges were designed and built by Freshman Dan Marino of Winchester (First Place) and Senior Archie Tram of Quincy (Second Place). The award winners will be recognized at the local National Engineers’ Week Awards Ceremony and Luncheon.

Stoneham resident and Malden Catholic alumnus Steve O’Neill, a Senior Vice President and professional engineer with the Beverly-based consulting firm Meridian Associates, Inc., mentored the Model Bridge Club as it prepared for the competition. The club was moderated by Science and Mathematics Department faculty members Dave Chuckran and Dennis Gleason.

Clubs from across the state representing more than twenty schools prepared for the contest by dedicating hundreds of hours to design and build their model bridges to exacting specifications. The competition culminated at Northeastern University’s Curry Student Center, where a panel of local experts judged and tested the bridges for aesthetics, strength and efficiency.

Model Bridge is one of dozens of extra and co-curricular activities offered at Malden Catholic. Along with its Robotics Club, Model Bridge complements MC’s Introduction to Engineering course within the school's science curriculum. This course and extra-curricular activities enable students to explore their interest in engineering through classroom instruction, lecture, labs, computer simulation and hands-on experience.
